Monthly Talk in March

Talk given by Professor R. Churchouse on Wednesday 17th March

Wednesday 17th March 2.15pm at The Rest: Talk by Prof. R. Churchouse: Solving the Enigma Code.

Emeritus Professor Churchouse will describe how the Enigma cipher machine was solved and some of the consequences for the Second World War. The Enigma was the most widely used cipher machine by the Germans during that war and more than 30,000 were in use by 1945. The machine was so complex that the Germans believed it was ‘unbreakable’, yet in 1931 three young Poles succeeded in solving it and reading enciphered messages. The method they used was brilliantly adapted by the British at Bletchley during the war. Professor Churchouse will trace the history of the Enigma, describe the Polish solution and the effects  of Bletchley’s decipherments on some of the major battles of the war, such as El Alamein and the Normandy Landings as well as the defeat of the U boats. There can be no doubt that this will be a fascinating talk by a distinguished practitioner and academic with direct experience himself of highly sensitive work related to codes and code breaking. Do come along if you can.           Gwyn Davis (654766).
