December 2008
Dear Members,
As Christmas is approaching our December programme will be relatively short, but our activities are continuing close to Christmas itself and I’m sure you will find them all stimulating and enjoyable – a really good mixture of learning and festive fun!
November was another busy and very satisfying month for us. John Pearman gave us
an excellent talk on the migration of Welsh settlers to Patagonia, we saw a fine
performance of Love’s Labour’s Lost at Stratford and we had a very enjoyable visit
to the Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace at Wells. At the time of writing we are looking
forward to our Coffee Morning in aid of the Mayor’s charity which will be held at
the end of the month. These are always very enjoyable and well-
Almost all of them will meet at least once in December and the few that are not meeting will resume in January. Right at the beginning of December we can look forward to a visit to the Penderyn Whisky Distillery and the following day to a talk given by Romeo Bassini and Aldo Bacchetta on the Italians in South Wales. You will see that we have quite a number of special events to take us up to Christmas. In date order they are the Latin and the Romans Group’s Pantomime, the Singalong Group’s Christmas Concert, a Special General Meeting our Christmas Lunch, our Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, the Writing and Storytelling Groups’ Stories and Poems Morning at the Prince of Wales in Kenfig and on the same morning John Pearman’s walk to (and perhaps into) the sea. Do come along to as many of them as you can. I guarantee you’ll enjoy them all. Full details are given in this newsletter.
This newsletter also gives details of some of the exciting events planned for 2009, including a visit to a concert at St David’s Hall, our own Celebration Event and a visit to a performance of West Side Story in January, a visit to Porthcawl Comprehensive School’s performance of Jekyll and Hyde in February, a residential visit to Scotland in May and a visit to a performance of The Sound of Music at the Millennium Centre in August. We can look forward eagerly to all of these, and there will of course be much more besides.
So there is much to enjoy in December and there are already many good things in prospect for 2009. For the moment though, let’s stay with 2008. When we come to look back over this year I’m sure we’ll agree that it has been another successful one for our U3A and that you will want me to thank all members who have worked so hard in so many different ways to achieve that success. And they will want me to thank everyone for the support they have received from their fellow members to make their work worthwhile. I do all that most readily and warmly.
And finally may I wish everyone peace and happiness at Christmas and throughout the New Year.
Yours sincerely,
Gwyn Davis
