Delivery of Newsletters

We would be very grateful for help with the delivery of Newsletters in the Sandpiper Road area. We would also be grateful for ‘relief’ deliverers in all areas who would cover for regular deliverers when they are temporarily unable to do their round. If you are able to help please contact me.

Dorothy Jones (tel 657571).

Computer Basics for Seniors

We have received from the Third Age Trust a copy of an excellent publication aimed at beginners or near beginners. The 193 page, simple to read manual also has included a CD of the on-line eLSe course of the same name. The book aims to provide a basic grounding in three main areas: word processing, e mailing and the internet.

Our present computer groups over the past few years have covered most of the contents but the manual would still be very useful for a member’s revision and it is very well presented. The cost including postage is £6. Copies can be ordered by contacting me by telephone or email. My email address is cmorte@hotmail.com Clive Mort (tel. 783223).

The Magazine U3A News

This magazine is published quarterly and free of charge by the Third Age Trust. It contains useful information and interesting news of U3As across the country. Copies are placed on the chairs at the monthly talks immediately after publication and further copies are left in the small dining room and on one of the rear windowsills in the board room at The Rest for members to pick up if they wish. The latest edition has just been published and is now available.  Gwyn Davis (tel. 654766).

Publicity

I would like to place news items about our U3A in such publications as The Gem and Seaside News and I would be very grateful to receive copy and photographs about our activities from convenors, events and visits organisers and any other members. Clive Mort (tel. 783223).

A Chance to help with Research

The National Institute of Adult Education has been commissioned to carry out research into what influences people to take up learning in retirement. They would like to form four research teams in Wales and have invited members of U3As to join these teams as volunteer researchers. Please contact me if you are interested in taking up this exciting opportunity. University College of Wales, Newport is also engaged in interesting research into aspects of memory and has invited U3A members to assist.

Please contact me if you are interested in taking up either or both of these exciting opportunities.

Porthcawl Lions: Sale of Books of Interest to U3A Members at The Rest

Porthcawl Lions have a bookcase of second hand books for sale at The Rest in the lobby between the large lounge and the main dining area and donate the proceeds to The Rest itself.  The Lions are very grateful to U3A members who have bought books or have given them for sale – which can be done by leaving them in the cupboard beneath the bookshelves. October’s travel theme will give way shortly to Biography - a very mixed category involving history, showbiz and sport.  Any queries, suggestions, book-requests to me. Andrew Collier (tel. 784939).

Porthcawl U3A Publications

We still have available copies of two excellent publications. One is A Listener’s Guide to Music, a five volume series written by Harry Lowman. These are now priced at £3 per volume but the set of five volumes is available at a substantial discount. Please contact Harry (tel. 663353) for details. The other is We Made It….and Then What? written by a group of members recounting their experiences in the aftermath of the Second World War. Copies are now available at £2.50 each. Please contact any member of the Committee if you would like a copy. Gwyn Davis (tel. 654766).

The Rest would be grateful for any new or used wrapping paper we can bring along. They can put it to good use.                  Dorothy Jones (tel. 657571).
