Chairman’s Note
“Baby, it’s cold outside!” - and inside too for a very brief period when The Rest’s
boiler broke down. But our February programme more than compensated, with its range
and quality and the sheer pleasure and enjoyment we always get from being and learning
together. All our interest groups were in splendid action, Howard Mortimore gave
us a delightful talk on Paul Robeson, we greatly enjoyed our visit to the Comprehensive
School performance of Annie as well as our own Gala Coffee Morning and Spring Fair.
At the time of writing we are looking forward very much to our visit to Rodmarton
Manor at the end of the month and also to Gwyn Petty’s talk which was postponed from
January. It is certain to be of a very high standard and another programme highlight.
March will bring its own delights. We begin with our Noson Lawen on St David’s Day
and the following week there’ll be a visit to an acclaimed production of Swan Lake.
Then we’ll have Professor Churchouse’s fascinating talk on the Enigma Code, followed
immediately afterwards by our AGM, and right at the end of the month we’re off to
Llandrindod Wells U3A for Sir Roy Strong’s lecture. Add all our interest groups to
this and you will see that we can look forward to another hugely rewarding month’s
programme. Look out too for details of another theatre visit in April.

BOOKS FOR SALE - together with the Rest where U3a hold most of their meetings, Porthcawl
Lions will be putting out a quantity of second hand books for sale. They will be
in the lobby between the large Lounge and the Dining Room and maybe purchased by
putting the appropriate sum in the adjacent honesty box, with proceeds to the Rest.
Customers will obviously include all Rest Guests and Visitors, but we hope also to
provide books of particular interest to U3A members, with categories to be notified
in this newsletter. We propose to start in June with Literary Classics (alongside
the permanent 'holiday reading'). Such schemes have done very well in some hospitals,
raising needed funds and meeting patients' needs. We hope to do the same for The
Rest and to extend the libraries of U3a students. During the summer we will introduce
travel books and future book categories will include various hobbies, the arts etc.
There will also be a box for donated books if anyone has them to spare. Any queries,
suggestions, book-requests to Andrew Collier, phone 784939.
