Interest Groups
As long as there is room in them, we are welcome to join as many Interest Groups as we wish or to attend any Group on an occasional basis. There is no charge, except for the Lunch Club. You will probably find it helpful to phone the convenor before you go along to a group for the first time.
Archaeology: We’ll meet at 10.15am at The Rest on Tuesday 13th July when I will talk on Doggerland – Europe’s lost world. Please note that the Swansea industrial archaeology walk with Dr. Edith Evans will now take place on Tuesday September 14th. Further details will be given in the September newsletter

Art History and Appreciation. We’ll meet at 2.15pm at The Rest on Monday 5th July to study the paintings of Tommaso Masaccio, the early 15th century Italian Renaissance painter and of Henri Matisse, the avant garde French painter of the first half of the 20th century. Graham Cross (tel. 785876).
Book Club. We’ll meet next at 10am at The Rest on Friday 2nd JULY when we’ll discuss The Little Friend by Donna Tart. The Book Club has now reached its maximum number. If you wish to join the group please telephone me and I shall put you on a waiting list. Barbara Miles (tel. 783291).

Conversations (Discussion). We’ll meet next on Thursday 15th July at 2.15pm at The Rest when we’ll discuss Is a comfortable retirement a right or a privilege? As this is our last session before the summer break, we will of course have an absolute right to a piece of cake! Family and Social History: We will not meet at The Rest in July but we’ll resume
our sessions there in September. For those interested purely in Family History, access
to data held on the Internet and advice and help are available to the group each

Food in Britain. We’ll meet next at 2.15pm at The Rest on Tuesday 6th July when Jan
Fletcher will lead a session entitled A light-
French. We are studying the four skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. We use the BBC course book French Experience 1 which includes authentic recordings. We are also reading and translating Le Petit Prince by Antoine de St Exupery. Our meetings begin at 10am and this month they are at The Atlantic on 6th July and at The Rest on 13th July. Gardening. We’ll meet at 10.30am at The Rest on WEDNESDAY 14th July for a question and answer session on summer planting. Please note the day and date. Handel Davies (tel.788364).
Geology. Please phone me for details of the July field trip. Members are reminded
that they attend field trips at their own risk and should take all necessary precautions
e.g. stout walking boots, warm waterproof clothing, hard hats when required, goggles
and a walking stick or poles. The group must stay together and anyone wishing to
leave early must inform the field co-
German. Our meetings are held on Thursday mornings from 10 to 12 noon. We follow the BBC Course Book Deutsch Plus, supplemented by additional material which is provided during the lesson. We also meet on alternate Thursdays in between to practise conversation and widen our knowledge of the country, its people, places, history and culture. The dates for our meetings in July are 1st and 15th July at 68 Long Acre Drive and 8th July at The Rest Helga Clarke (tel. 783880).
History. We only meet once before 'the end of term' so we’ll look at the Renaissance
and maybe tie up some loose ends from our year in the 1600s. This will be on Wednesday
7th July, at ten, when I hope we will also settle the future of our group -

Latin and the Romans. We’ll meet at the Atlantic for a grammar revision session at 2.15pm on 5th July We’ll meet at The Rest to translate Latin stories and conclude our study of the Roman Republic at 10.30am on 12th July. Listeners’ Guide to Music. We’ll meet at 2pm at The Rest on Wednesday 14th July to listen to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 21 and Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks. Brian Nelson (tel. 742159).

Lunch Club. The Lunch Club will meet at 12.30pm at The Rest on Wednesday 7th July before Terry Robbins’s talk in the afternoon. The menu will be The Rest’s delicious Cold Meats and Salad Buffet with Chips and Jacket Potatoes. Please telephone me to book your place no later than the previous Monday. We are asked to note that, to avoid putting The Rest to unnecessary trouble and expense, if we order lunch and cancel less than 24 hours in advance or fail to attend for the lunch we’ve booked, we’ll be asked to pay The Rest for the meal. Philosophy and Ideas. Friday 9th July at 10.00am will give us our last chance to resolve the issues of existence and knowledge, right and wrong, language and feelings; I doubt if we'll succeed, but we enjoy trying and talking about it. Andrew Collier (784939).

Shakespeare Study Group. We’ll meet next at 2.15pm on Tuesday 13th July and on Tuesday 20th July at ARLINGTON ROAD CHURCH to continue our study of The Tempest. Barbara Miles (tel. 783291).
Singalong. Our concerts will be given at 2pm at The Rest on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd July. Please aim to arrive by 1.30pm on both days. We’ll also meet at 2pm at The Rest on Friday 9th July to hear the recording of our rehearsal. Harry Lowman (tel. 663353).
